the Materia Designs ignus table with Shou-sugi-ban finish…
we have been experimenting with an adaptation of the japanese technique known as Shou- Sugi-Ban as a furniture finish at Materia Designs, and we’re really happy with the results… matt uses a variety of coniferous woods, predominantly hemlock and pine, which he torches after cutting, and then hand rubs every inch of the wood with a wire brush to imbed the ashes into the grain of the wood… this causes the grain to pop, giving an almost reptilian texture to the lumber and adding a very dynamic quality to the furniture; at once extremely modern and rustic… we are expanding the Shou-sugi-ban line to not only include a variety of farm tables, but seating, consoles and mirrors as well….
the ignus table is designed so that the legs separate from the tabletop, making for easy packing…
the richly patinaed table top, constructed of reclaimed hemlock barn siding and coated in high quality water borne and food safe sealant…
