recently i’ve been thinking about our guest room and what shape it will take as the last room in our house to finally get renovated… wall colors, the antique iron bed i’m inheriting from my mother and father… these are some of the shots i’ve been ruminating on…

i love all the elements here; the texture of the headboard (which in another setting could look too traditional for me,) the metal lamps, the bedspread…

i guess what i’m really attracted to in all these images is the headboards, an interior element i have never had, and actually been afraid of until seeing these pictures… as a fix, i recently painted the wall behind my bed dark charcoal… slow progression as always…

there’s something about this shot which is so mysterious, i just want to walk around the door and see the rest of the room… i love the low bed with the bedspread spilling over onto the floor…

i spotted this photo on desire to inspire many months ago, and again loved the headboard and relaxed european bedding…

much more my typical style of bed, with no headboard… i had to include just this one…

one of my most dear friends and family members went for it yesterday! in an impromptu moment of clarity, she took the bull by the horns and chose an auspicious day; lunar eclipse, full moon, and faith… very inspiring, vibrant action… let love live… bon journee!

a single man, directed by tom ford, is far and away the best movie i have seen in quite awhile… an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s book by the same title, tom ford‘s first attempt at directing is a beautiful cinematic tribute to love, grief and friendship…
each shot is brilliant, with the placement of every object as in a highly orchestrated vignette… switching back and forth between black and white and soft, velvety color, the visual language of each scene is as soulful and poignant as each of the performances… i could go on and on, but i am not a movie critic; just see it for yourself…

one of my favorite french fashion collections, lilith, has the most beautiful images for their ete 2011 campaign… inspired by the soulful colors and textures of havanna, cuba in the 1940′s, this season is one of their best yet…

we’re getting dangerously close to being done with the first main phase of construction on our kitchen renovation, and the next big step is to refinish the floors throughout the entire downstairs… we were lucky enough to discover that the entire house including the kitchen and both bathrooms had intact 1940′s doug fir floors, so we are just trying to decide how we want to refinish them…
we want to bring in as much light as possible, while still letting the grain show through, so we’re going with some type of light grey finish… this will be achieved by either pickling, which will let the natural warm tones of the wood shine through under raised grain which would be greyish, or we can bleach the floors, eliminating the warm tones, and then go overtop with one of the Bona stains in Driftwood…. this would achieve the look i’m going for, but is by far the most labor intensive and toxic of the options… we can also whitewash (in this case greywash) by custom mixing a light grey paint, and then thinning and rubbing it into the raised grain after sanding… whatever we choose, we will have to try samples on the actual wood to ensure we know what it will come out like… once we start this process i’ll post about our findings…
in the meantime i can dream that it’s finished and looks like some of these beautiful images pulled from google….

in the newest edition of US Elle Decor, they did a feature on 5 up and coming interior designers, one of which is m.elle design, a mother daughters team based in New York and Southern California… originally the image in Elle Decor didn’t catch my eye, but several days ago i saw one of their homes featured on the interiors blog desire to inspire, and i loved it… the colors and simplicity are absolutely perfect, and i love the play of textures… thought this would be good inspiration for the weekend…

i must admit to being painfully picky when it comes to paintings… so much so that our house’s walls have been strikingly bare for the past two years, save for a few very special works… one of these pieces is by the dynamic painter Betty Clark, who creates hauntingly ethereal acrylic paintings in a quiet and wonderfully nuanced palette… for her, “painting… becomes an experience of transformation with a strange beauty and fragile completeness.”

every once in awhile, i see an image or set of photographs that make me crave a classic loft… the living space and studio of fashion designer cum felt artist, Dana Barnes…

i love the color blocks mixed with the more raw elements of the architecture…

the more subdued palette of traditional japanese indigo…

this is what really made me want to move in…

such a serene and wide open bathroom…
